ADSS optical cable is a non-metallic, self-supporting fiber optic cable designed for aerial installation along power lines, capable of withstanding mechanical and environmental stresses without additional support.OverviewAll-dielectric self-supporting (ADSS) cables are fiber optic cables that do not contain any metallic components, making them electrically insulated and safe for installation near high-voltage power lines (110 kV to 500 kV) without risk of short circuits or interference . The "self-supporting" feature means the cable can bear its own weight and external loads such as wind, ice, and UV exposure, eliminating the need for messenger wires or lashing . ADSS cables are widely used by electrical utilities for communications along transmission and distribution lines, providing a cost-effective alternative to OPGW and OPAC cables .StructureADSS cables are typically manufactured in two main structural designs:Central Tube Structure: Optical fibers are housed in a PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) tube filled with water-blocking material, with excess fiber length to reduce strain. The tube is reinforced with aramid yarns for tensile strength and covered with an outer sheath of PE (Polyethylene) or anti-tracking material depending on voltage requirements .Layer-Stranded Structure: Fibers are placed in loose tubes with water-blocking grease, twisted around a central reinforcement such as fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP). Kevlar yarn is wrapped around the assembly to enhance tensile performance, followed by a protective outer sheath . The fibers themselves can be arranged in loose buffer tubes or ribbon configurations, with slack provided to minimize strain and maintain low optical loss over the cable's lifetime .
