Optical Power Meter ID Mode

ID Mode, often referred to as Wave ID, allows an optical power meter to automatically recognize and differentiate multiple wavelengths from a compatible light source, reducing test time and errors. What is ID Mode?ID Mode, or Wave ID, is a feature on modern optical power meters such as the AFL OPM4 and OPM5 that enables the meter to detect and identify multiple wavelengths simultaneously when paired with a Wave ID-enabled light source . This is particularly useful in fiber optic networks where multiple signals at different wavelengths are transmitted over the same fiber. How ID Mode WorksAutomatic Wavelength Recognition: The meter identifies the wavelength of the incoming optical signal without manual input, ensuring the correct measurement is taken for each channel .Dual or Single Wave Detection: Some meters support Dual Wave or Tri Wave modes, allowing technicians to measure two or three wavelengths at once, which speeds up testing and reduces human error .Reference Setting: The ID Mode works in conjunction with the Set Reference function, allowing the meter to store a reference power level for each wavelength. This enables relative power measurements (insertion loss testing) and absolute power readings .Practical BenefitsReduced Test Time: By automatically identifying wavelengths, technicians do not need to manually switch between wavelengths for each measurement .Error Reduction: Minimizes the risk of recording incorrect readings due to wavelength mismatch.Data Management: Many meters with ID Mode can store results for each wavelength and transfer them to PC software like TRM® 3.0 or FlexReporter for reporting and analysis .Field Efficiency: Rugged design and wave ID functionality make these meters suitable for outdoor and high-volume testing environments.Usage TipsEnsure the optical power meter is paired with a Wave ID-enabled light source.Insert the fiber into the meter's optical port with the appropriate adapter cap.Activate ID Mode to automatically detect the wavelength(s).Use the Set Reference key to store reference power levels for relative measurements.Review readings in dBm, µW, or dB as needed, switching units with the meter's display keys . In summary, ID Mode simplifies multi-wavelength fiber testing by automatically identifying signals, storing reference levels, and reducing both test time and errors, making it an essential feature for modern optical network maintenance and installation.
