Composition of Relay Protection Device Circuit

Relay protection circuits consist of sensing elements, the relay logic, and the trip circuit that operates the circuit breaker to isolate faults.Key Components1. Instrument Transformers (CTs and PTs)Current Transformers (CTs): Measure line current and provide a scaled-down signal to the relay. The primary winding is connected in series with the line to be protected, while the secondary winding feeds the relay coil .Potential Transformers (PTs): Measure voltage and provide a safe, reduced voltage signal to the relay for voltage-based protection. 2. Protective RelayActs as the decision-making device that monitors electrical quantities such as current, voltage, frequency, impedance, or differential values .Applies protection logic (overcurrent, distance, differential, directional, or ground fault) and determines if a fault condition exists.Modern numerical relays may include programmable logic, event recording, waveform capture, metering, and communication capabilities . 3. Trip CircuitProvides the path to operate the circuit breaker once the relay detects a fault .Includes a power supply (usually DC from station batteries), trip coil of the circuit breaker, and stationary contacts of the relay.Ensures that the relay's output can reliably energize the breaker to isolate the faulty section. 4. Circuit BreakerThe interrupting device that opens the power circuit to isolate the fault.Works in coordination with the relay; the relay decides when to trip, and the breaker executes the interruption . 5. Auxiliary ComponentsWiring and control power: Connects the relay, CTs/PTs, and trip circuit.Auxiliary relays and contacts: Provide interlocking, signaling, and backup protection.Communication channels: For remote monitoring, coordination, and event recording .Functional OverviewWhen a fault occurs, the CT or PT senses abnormal current or voltage and sends a signal to the relay. The relay evaluates the signal against its settings and, if a fault is confirmed, closes its contacts to energize the trip circuit. The trip circuit then activates the breaker, isolating the faulty section and protecting the rest of the system . This chain of components—sensing, relay logic, trip circuit, and breaker operation—must all function correctly to ensure reliable protection and system stability .
