Single-mode fiber is designed to support only one propagation mode, meaning it does not carry multiple modes of light.Single-mode fiber (SMF) has an extremely narrow core, typically around 8 to 10 micrometers in diameter, which restricts light to a single path or mode as it travels through the fiber . This design eliminates modal dispersion, ensuring that all light pulses travel essentially the same distance, preserving signal integrity over long distances and enabling high-bandwidth transmission . Because of this, single-mode fiber is ideal for long-haul communication links, such as telecom backbones and transoceanic cables . In contrast, multimode fiber has a larger core, usually 50 µm or 62.5 µm, which allows multiple light modes to propagate simultaneously . These multiple paths can cause modal dispersion, limiting the effective transmission distance and bandwidth compared to single-mode fiber . Multimode fiber is therefore better suited for short-distance, high-speed data transmission within buildings or data centers . The term "mode" in fiber optics refers to a stable electromagnetic field distribution or a specific path that light can follow while propagating down the fiber . In single-mode fiber, the physical dimensions and refractive index profile are engineered so that only the fundamental mode is supported, preventing any higher-order modes from propagating . This is why single-mode fiber cannot have multiple modes; its core size and wavelength cutoff are specifically designed to allow only one mode. In summary, single-mode fiber inherently supports only a single mode of light, and any reference to multiple modes applies only to multimode fiber, where the larger core allows several light paths to coexist, leading to modal dispersion and shorter effective transmission distances .
